Why Basement Waterproofing Is Essential in the Winter

Fun Facts About Mold
Fun Facts About Mold

If you’ve been thinking about contacting a foundation repair service or home waterproofing service to seal up your basement, you would probably assume that basement waterproofing — like any other home repair task — would best be accomplished during the spring or summer.

Many homeowners don’t realize it, but waiting until spring to repair basement leaks or foundation cracks is actually a very big mistake.

First of all, your basement isn’t less likely to leak just because there’s snow on the ground. Even when the temperature is below freezing and it causes the ground to freeze and ice over, only the top layer of soil is frozen; lower layers of earth — including the layers that surround your basement — are still warm enough to allow liquid water to pass through.

When the ground does freeze over, the colder upper layer draws up liquid water from the warmer layers below. This water can freeze if the temperature continues to drop, and when water freezes into ice, it expands. The extra soil pressure may not seem to present any immediate risks to your home, but the pressure can cause foundation damage if it increases or if your foundation is already cracked. Small droplets of liquid water can easily soak into porous cinder blocks and bricks when it’s warm and then freeze when the temperature drops, causing tiny cracks in the foundation that build up over time.

Moreover, it’s important to look into basement waterproofing now before too much snow falls — and before all that snow melts. It’s estimated that around 98% of all household basements will experience water damage at some point, and it’s very common for flooding to occur when snow starts melting (sometimes this can even happen during the winter if the temperature suddenly goes up). Water damage can be incredibly expensive and it’s also very dangerous; mold can start to grow on porous materials (like clothes or carpets) after just 24-48 hours of continued dampness.

Trust us — right now really is the perfect time to consider basement waterproofing for your home!
