It’s safe to say that spring is in full swing. And if you’ve noticed water leaking from the walls in your basement, it’s more than just a sign that it’s raining or that the snow is thawing.

Every time your basement leaks when it rains, significant damage is being done to your home’s foundation. Additionally, this moisture creates the perfect environment for mold to start growing in just 24 to 48 hours!

The average cost of repairing foundation leaks will set you back approximately $3,000 to $5,000. To prevent this, most homes are equipped with a sump pump that can remove excess water from your basement before it causes damage.

Is your sump pump doing all that it should be doing to prevent basement water leaks ? To make sure your home’s sump pump is in its best working condition throughout this year’s rainiest days, be sure to take these three steps to check up on your sump pump:

Perform a visual inspection

Every year, you should visually inspect your sump pump. Make sure it’s plugged in, that its power cord is in good shape, that its drain hose is correctly connected, and that the sump pit is free of debris that could clog its hose.

Perform a test run

One of the best ways to tell whether or not your sump pump is preventing basement water leaks as well as it should is to take it for a test run. By pouring water into the sump pit, you can see how quickly your sump pump responds to the water. Ideally, a sump pump should detect and drain water automatically.

Install a battery back-up

To ensure that your sump pump will run even in the event of a power outage, you may want to consider installing a battery back-up for your pump that will act as a source of power when your house’s electricity goes out.
